About ABU Dhabi Airport

The Airport is the gateway to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE. Abu Dhabi, a cosmopolitan centre of business and a tourist attraction, has many things to offer its visitors and residents: an immensely versatile landscape, a thriving investment hub, and a friendly living environment boasting one of the highest per capita incomes and one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

History of Abu Dhabi aviation dates back to 1929, when the British Royal Force started using the calm coastal waters as a base for its "flying boats". During the 1960s, the Emirate's first airport was inaugurated in Al Bateen district, and by 1982, a new airport was established approximately 30 km east of Abu Dhabi City, at a major national crossroads on the UAE road network. The new facility was designed for a capacity of 3.5 million passengers per annum, and the current multi-billion dollar master plan aspires to raise the Airport's passenger capacity to up to 20 million passengers by 2010, when the new Midfield Terminal Complex is completed.

Other major components of the Master Plan include a second runway, a new air traffic control tower, a new cargo complex, and a duty free zone.

The Airport will serve one of the world's fastest growing cities. Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, has rapidly grown from an obscure coastal trading community into a bustling cosmopolitan and a major investment centre.

Abu Dhabi is both the capital and Federal capital of the United Arab Emirates, and is the largest of the seven emirates. This second most populous city of the UAE lies on a T-shaped island, with its futuristic skyscrapers rising from the desert coast of the Persian Gulf.

Among the modern island city there are remains of an older and more cultural society. Abu Dhabi comprises of international luxurious hotels, never-ending shopping malls, extensive entertainment and leisure facilities, along beautiful green streets and parks.
